This isn't a timely post by any means, but I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of it. One of the Norton updates from 2006/03/15 causes AOL to disconnect immediately after connecting. The remedy is to temporarily disable Internet Worm Protection, get online, and run LiveUpdate to get the new version of Internet Worm Protection.

Sounds like the first smart thing they've ever done.
HEH, damn.
I used the Norton Internet Security for a 3 month trial and decided not to keep it. I uninstalled it, but apparently the Norton Internet Worm Protection did not uninstall. I cannot find it listed anywhere in Windows explorer. My AOL Security System has a comment under firewalls and states that it still exists and could interfer with my system. I have trouble seeing some graphics on my blogs, and I cannot see backgrounds on these sites. I would like to uninstall this section of Norton Worm Protection, but I don't know how to, because it is not visible in my computer. Any suggestions?
Bonnie:
1) First, download SymNRT (the Norton Removal Tool):
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
Don't run it yet.
2) Then download CCleaner and install it:
http://ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?f=3
3) Close all programs and double-click your downloaded Norton Removal Tool and go through the wizard and let it restart your computer at the end.
4) When Windows is back up and running, go to Start, click Run, type %ProgramFiles% and click OK.
5) In the Program Files explorer window, locate any folders that start with the word "Norton" or "Symantec" and delete them. If any file/folder won't delete, make a note of it in your mind and let me know.
6) Double click Common Files (inside of Program Files). Look for "Norton" and "Symantec" again and delete anything there.
7) Open CCleaner. Click the Issues button on the left (update: it's called "Registry" now). Click Scan for issues. Remove all issues found and let it delete all items (make a backup of the items when it asks, and save the backups somewhere you know where to get them). Scan for issues again, and remove all issues again. Continue scanning and removing until there are no issues left. Let me know if you have any problems at this step.
That might take care of it.
Hey Dj,I had (have) the exact the same problem as Bonnie(scroll). I went through all your steps but there is still one folder under 'common files/folders that will not let me delete..Access denied and the file was 'symantec shared',,Any other ideas and does having this norton worm running with my Mcafee all that bad? I appreciate your site and your help, you explain things fully. Thanks
Go to Start, click Run, and type:
cmd /k sc delete "Symantec Core LC"
You should see "[SC] DeleteService SUCCESS". If you get "[SC] OpenService FAILED 1060" then that service doesn't exist. If that's the case, go to Start, Run…, and type services.msc
Scroll through the services list looking for things containing "Symantec" or "Norton", and when you find one, double-click on it. Look at the "Service Name" field, and use that in the command:
Start, Run…, cmd /k sc delete "Whatever service name you found"
Then you can delete that Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.
It might not be "Symantec Core LC"; I know of another that is under Symantec Shared but I don't remember how to spell it (it contains a few 'C's, an 'l' or two, a hyphen? I don't remember exactly).
I'm having the same problem with Norton Internet Worm Protection interfering with my AOL Security Center firewall. I've followed all your recommended steps and I can not find any more Symantec/Norton files and folders on my computer, except for registry entries. I've been using the CCleaner issues scan, but the same 34 Symantec entries/issues keep showing up over and over when I re-scan, even after I click to fix them. All entries are listed as "Unused File Extension(s)" and the names range from ".liveupdate" to "Symantec.stSettings.1"
Any further help would be greatly appreciated!
Use Dial-a-fix's "Repair Permissions" tool.

Had norton installed for 5 years went to Mcaffee Norton Worm Protection slowed down AOL after installing the new program. The only way to improve it after using symantec's removal tool was to type in the search engine one at a time norton, symantec these will show most of the files still on the computer. If this doesn't work go back to the search engine and type in nav (norton anti-virus) and right click on each file and see which ones still are asscociated with norton and then type in nis (norton internet securtiy) once again right click on each file one of these is usually a symantec core. After deleting these files reboot the computer and then use the ccleaner (freeware) or tuneup utilties 2007 and have them clean the registry. This worked on my computer hope everyone has as much luck as I did. Note Mcaffee needed to do a quick repair after and that took a couple of minutes.
I have experienced the same issue with Norton Worm protection running, but I have never had Norton on here…ikes
So I have used the above to try and repair even system restored…
But to no avail I can't get this thing to work on my workgroup, I will post more when I get farther ahead
I downloaded ccleaner but there's no choice along the left named "issues." I have cleaner, registry, tools, and options. I ran the analyze.
This is an old post. The CCleaner developer renamed it to "Registry", as you see there.
hi dj, i did what you recommended and it has worked. my windows firewall no longer says norton worm protector on it and ccleaner no l;onger finds any registry issues. but windows firewall still turns itself off at start up and wont restart when i try to restart it. any ideas?
Hi DJ,
I have exactly the same issue with Norton on my wife's HP laptop that was already running so slow with Norton Antivirus (scan only) pre-installed.
I recently bought Kaspersky for the three laptops we have at home – after McAffee expired on my own laptop and was giving me hard time renewing online. With 3 Kaspersky licenses, I uninstalled the Norton from my wife's HP laptop and installed Kaspersky. Still, that laptop was running slow so I purchased PC Mechanic in my attempt to improve its overall speed. When I ran the PC Mechanic, that's how I knew (from PC Mechanic diagnosis) that the Norton Internet Worm Protection is still on and slowing the laptop down.
After several furstrating attempts to find help anywhere just to get rid of this excessively invasive and controlling software, I finally came across this thread. I followed everything you said and successfully been able to clean all the junk (specially NIWP) that literally slowed my wife's laptop and brought it up to it's maximum potential speed.
I did not encounter folders that are stubborn to delete – but I thank you for your "just in case" instruction.
I really THANK YOU and very grateful for your selfless help to people. You made difficult SIMPLE. Without your help, we might end up otherwise spending more than the cost of installing NORTON's crappy program.
JR, I assume you meant to post that on another one of my anti-Norton posts.
At any rate, good for-pay antivirus programs are as follows, in this order:
1) NOD32
2) AVG
3) avast!
4) avira
