Since 0.57.7 is incapable of reporting Win32 errors, has no logging facility, and has various bugs (Win2k 'version.dll' access violation, etc), it has been deprecated in favor of the latest v0.60 beta until Dial-a-fix v1.0 is finalized (which will take me forever to finish). Please visit the Dial-a-fix v0.60 Wiki article and download Dial-a-fix there.

I have redirected the download locations for all forms of v0.57.7 to this post.

I have also updated Dial-a-fix v0.60 to v0.60.0.16 to bring it up to speed a little bit (and remove the Repair permissions bug where it has the potential to remove limited user accounts from the Windows XP welcome screen — they still existed as users, however).

Do not use Dial-a-fix v0.57.7.

Thank you.

    Hi DJ,

    Does the current version of DAF (v0.60.0.16) register / re-register VGX.DLL ?

Given that the current mitigation for the IE VML Exploit is to deregister this DLL via:

    regsvr32 -u "%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VGX\vgx.dll

I was wondering if DAF might re-register it ? If so then we would need to take care to de-register it again once we have finished! :-)

    Kind Regards

    Simon Zerafa

Hello, my computer will not do safe mode or system restore. I read Steve Bass's article and downloaded your software. It did not work, any suggestions before I reload OS?
    Thank You

It depends. If you can't get into Safe Mode, Dial-a-fix is not going to be able to fix that. Are you able to get into Windows in normal mode, then?

I suggest you register at Lunarsoft.net and post in the Windows support section in the appropriate sub-forum for your version of Windows. Please post as much information as possible, such as your Windows version and service pack level, descriptions of everything that is not working correctly, and your troubleshooting steps up to this point.

Unfortunately, if your system is crashing then Dial-a-fix is not going to be useful to you at this time.

Microsoft updates acquired by automatic update will not download.

Is your program the answer? While I am not a techie, I am not afraid to fiddle a little with settings if what I do can be reversed.

Don: Make sure you download the latest version here: http://wiki.DjLizard.net/Dial-a-fix

It's a zip file which means you'll need to extract Dial-a-fix.exe out of it. Windows is able to do this normally without any other software, so once the file is downloaded, double click it to open the zip, then drag the blue gear icon out of the window that opened and onto your desktop. Double click on that blue icon and then click "Flush SoftwareDistribution" and answer "Yes" to the information dialog (it's long and you don't really need to read it if you're not a tech). This usually solves it without much change to your system. If not, then come back to Dial-a-fix again and checkmark "Fix Windows Update" and click GO. Restart the computer and visit Windows Update. If you receive any errors when you clicked "GO" before, send me an email or post on the Dial-a-fix forum at http://lunarsoft.net

This program really doesn't change anything that wasn't already the default - it uses Microsoft's own files to put things (like Windows Update) back the way they were when Windows was first installed (i.e., working).

Lunarsoft.net has other forums, so if you need any help that isn't Dial-a-fix or Windows Update related, register there and post in the appropriate forum. It's free and the people there are generous.
