RegSeeker customized exclude.ini file
Filed Under Security, Software | Leave a Comment
Hoverdesk's RegSeeker 1.52 is a very good registry cleaner but sometimes it seems a bit too aggressive in its cleaning. Users have complained about programs and settings that have been modified when they shouldn't be.
To counter these problems Andavari has now created a customized exclude.ini file.
If you experience any problems resulting from the use of RegSeeker or want a specific exclusion included into the RegSeeker customized exclude.ini file you can contact Andavari via a Personal Message (PM) in the CCleaner.com forum. The file will be updated if and when needed so don't forget to check regularly.
Andavari's RegSeeker customized exclude.ini file is downloadable here.
Hoverdesk's creator Thibaud Djian has been notified and he promised me to keep a close look at the exclusions in Andavari's file and will decide if he updates RegSeeker with them at a later date.

Dial-a-fix v0.60.0.24 released! (oops)
Filed Under Dial-a-fix, Fixes | 2 Comments
I had to fix a theme double buffering bug that would cause DAF to be mostly black when using themes.
So if you downloaded yesterday's .23, you'll want to download .24 to replace it.

Dial-a-fix v0.60.0.23 released!
Filed Under Dial-a-fix, Fixes | 2 Comments
* Slowed tooltip wait speed to 250ms (from 0ms) – tooltips are no longer annoying!
* Re-added "Hide disabled policies" checkmark that mysteriously disappeared from previous build
* Sped up policy scanning
* Reduced startup lag slightly
* Double buffered all forms and most controls (less flicker when moving/resizing certain dialogs), except the About box's rich text areas (Delphi 7's standard TRichEdit can't double buffer)
* The complete version number is now listed in the titlebar/caption, as well as the log
* The Dial-a-fix download is now a single .zip archive which includes secedit
* Until further notice from Microsoft, Dial-a-fix 0.60.0.23 now ignores browseui and shdocvw when Internet Explorer 7 is present (because attempting to register them produces "Unspecified error" – it is unknown at this time whether this is a Microsoft bug or if Microsoft intended this behavior for the new versions of these files)

Sophos is recommending that system administrators ask their security vendors if they are capable of properly protecting them on the forthcoming 64-bit version of Vista, as arguments continue regarding access to Microsoft's operating system code (kernel). Sophos has reassured its customers that Sophos Anti-Virus will offer full protection against malware threats on Vista, and suggests that some security vendors may not have given sufficient thought to the new operating system when developing their products.
Anti-virus firms Symantec and McAfee have recently made high-profile complaints that they are being "locked out" of the Vista operating system kernel by Microsoft's PatchGuard prevention system. They argue that this is preventing them from continuing to develop pro-active protection against new malware, sometimes referred to as 'host intrusion prevention' or 'HIPS'. They claim this action is anti-competitive.
However, Sophos argues that its approach to HIPS technology has met with no problems on both the low-spec and high-spec versions of Windows Vista. In addition, Sophos claims that Microsoft has so far provided all the interfaces that Sophos needs for providing this form of protection.

Found New Hardware wizard – The system cannot find the file specified.
Filed Under Fixes, Technical | 2 Comments
It's too bad it doesn't tell you what file it is. This has happened twice in our shop for two different machines with two different classes of devices. One was a printer and the other was a wireless network adapter (both were USB devices, though). After the typical chkdsk /r, getting a new driver download, etc, we have come to find out that reinstalling DirectX 9 fixed the problem. Why? I don't know, but if the system cannot find the file specified, try reinstalling DirectX 9 just in case.
Hope this helps someone.

Windows XP SP1 support ends… now
Filed Under Fixes, Software | Leave a Comment
Support for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Service Pack 1a (SP1a) ends on October 10, 2006 (which effectively means immediately). This also includes security updates for these service packs.
We, as Microsoft do, recommend that those who are still running Windows XP SP1 or SP1a upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 as soon as possible.

The final release of IE7 is fast approaching … and I mean really fast … and will be delivered to customers via Automatic Updates a few weeks after it’s available for download.
Hmmm, getting Internet Explorer 7 through Automatic Update will confuse lots of people with average and less than average computing skills. And is it already perfect?
Edit: You could however opt to disable the automatic delivery of IE7 as a high-priority update via Automatic Updates and the Windows Update and Microsoft Update sites. See here how to download a toolkit.
