Update good, sellout bad.
Should have gone Open Source to get it away from that VB crap.
Well, it said he was still in school so maybe he used the money for that. Hopefully we will get more cool stuff from him one day.
Trend Micro isn't a bad company, and they at least kept cwshredder free. As long as they keep development active on it I'm sure it will be a good change.
Anyone can write a HijackThis style program, and frankly I hope they do.
@Tarun
Yes, I think they probably can create such a program but they won't be as popular and as widely used. Merijn was the one who had the vision to create such a program first.
His problem is that he simply doesn't has the time to take HijackThis a step further because he feels his studies at university are much more important. And who can blame him for that.
Sentence a program to death (aka Trend Micro) or open source it where others can help fix and contribute more to the program. Tough choice there.
It's a pity this world is so driven by money.
Yes there are other programs out there like HijackThis (a-squared has one) but it's not up to par yet.
Frankly, I'd love it if DjLizard made a HijackThis replacement.
Bummer, i just can't see Trend having the vision to really improve on HJT, i hope they prove me wrong but i doubt it.
OpenSource is not the answer to everything. Selling software is better than giving it away then charging an arm and a leg for CONTRACT SERVICE for software so unusable that it takes a consultant to understand it.
OpenSource has its place, just like proprietary software. It is a capitalistic world.. get over it.
So, what you're saying, Marduk, is that, if HijackThis were released under some kind of open source license, it would suddenly need a consultant to understand it and cost everyone else and arm and a leg to use?
I've been using open source and free software for years and I've never even clapped eyes on a consultant (that I know of). I've certainly never had to hand over any extremities in exchange for help figuring out which button to push. Even if I WANTED to do this, I doubt many developers would be interested in charging for help given that these people tend to have a full time job and can only enjoy FOSS programming in their spare time.
But that's all just capitalism, so lets get over it. Maybe when we're over it people will see how promising the free and open source production method really is - make stuff for free and get stuff you need. No more shitty jobs that make other people rich while giving you just about enough money to keep you going so you can work some more. Well, unless you're a consultant, apparently. In that case, you barter for appendages.
